Here’s really my only failure in the gear department. Like most hikers, I’m pretty obsessive about weight. So when I put all my gear together, instead of getting a legit rain jacket, I just settled for a rain shell. It was cheap, and very light compared to lined rain jackets. The rain shell was mediocre at best. It would keep light rain out, but not much more. After five minutes of decent rain, I’d be soaked. That was fine in the warmer months. But in the Whites and in some of the colder weather, that is not cool at all. I really regretted not having legit rain gear (and some rain pants too) during those cold downpours. If I were to do it again, I’d probably get a good rain jacket at the expense of some more weight. It’s a trade off I don’t like making, but I think it would be well worth it.
Since it was just a nylon shell, it was extremely light.
